Over the past year, the WFTDI has focused on self care and wellness. Self care is the practice of taking care of yourself and should be a priority, while wellness is defined as being in good health or striving to reach a healthy goal. They work hand in hand with each other and both should be integrated into our lives. Many people put others first, without realizing they are neglecting themselves. In order to help others, we must first take care of ourselves. A classic example of this is on an airplane where they tell you to put on your oxygen mask first and then help others, in an emergency. During these challenging and uncertain times, it is even more evident how important self care is. We are experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety in our personal and professional lives, all while doing our best to stay fit for derby’s return.
We are running ourselves ragged trying to stay physically, emotionally and mentally healthy while taking care of our families, our friends, our careers and ourselves.
WFTDI recognizes the importance of self care and wellness and the struggle to achieve both so we have increased our offerings in these areas. At Rollercon 2019, we offered a foam rolling workshop. It was so well received that we then offered the workshop at Championships. This year, we introduced “Self-Care with Blue and Rolli” live on twitch.tv/WFTDA (archived on The WFTDA YouTube channel) and an Instagram page. We are now introducing a bi-weekly blog that will address self care and wellness issues and provide information, tips and resources. You’ll be able to access the blog here, on our new website! The goal of the blog is to help our membership take the initiative to create healthy environments for themselves. The blog will coordinate with our show, Instagram and will also introduce original content. It is a work in progress, and we love your feedback and input; please feel free to send us any questions, comments and/or suggestions. We are especially interested in knowing what topics you would like the show or blog to cover.
Now go take a hot bath, go for a run, read a book or veg out watching tv; in other words, go do something nice for yourself, you deserve it!
